Christmas Canons

Christmas Canons is a set of three canons, whose texts tell the Christmas story. They can be performed by any four part chorus, equal or mixed voices. They can be performed from the front of the performing space, or the choir can be placed around the perimeter of the hall or sanctuary. They can be used for introit or recession. I Saw Three Ships

I Saw Three Ships is a contemporary setting of the well-known anonymous text. In a rollicking 7/8 time signature, the asymmetric nature of the rhythm suggests the rocking of the ship. A lot of fun for the choir, who can have four members play the optional recorder parts. Two flutes and two clarinets, or a woodwind quartet of flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon can substitute, or the accompaniment can be played by celeste, electric piano, or piano. Hodie



Hodie is a three movement choral suite for Christmas. It is a rhythmic and joyous short work to announce the Christmas Season. Hodie is harmonically complex, using parallel major and minor harmony in each song. Based on anonymous Latin texts, an English text is also provided. For Mixed Chorus and Piano. Published as separate octavos, the three movements of Hodie are listed below.

The gently syncopated accompaniment suggests the movement of the caravan, as the kings from the east traveled west to see the King of Kings. “Beholding the star, the wise men, with great joy, came seeking for the boy.” The ethereal melody evokes the sense of wonder the Magi felt as they paid homage to Jesus.
